Measures Against International Terrorism
The 11 September 2001, multiple terrorist attacks in the United States
claimed more than 3,000 lives and served as a rude awakening for people
around the world.
And in October 2002, terrorists detonated bombs that blew up a nightclub
and other buildings in Bali, Indonesia, victimizing over 180 people including
tourists.
Tokyo has many potential targets including numerous foreign embassies
and facilities. Therefore, there is a valid concern for the possibility
of a terrorist attack. Moreover, there are a large number of foreigners
residing in or regularly visiting Japan. There is also the fear that these
foreigners could serve as supporters or as the infrastructure for international
terrorist organizations.
As a means to tackle this growing threat, the MPD has recently created
the Third Foreign Affairs Division, specializing in matters concerning
international terrorism. |
