ERADICATING ORGANIZED CRIME TO PROTECT THE SAFE LIVING STANDARDS OF TOKYO RESIDENTS

Recently, there has been a drastic increase in heinous crimes committed by international organized groups. These crimes includes; murders, robberies, theft, credit card fraud, as well as the smuggling and distribution of firearms and illegal drugs. KOBANS AND RESIDENTIAL KOBANS SUPPORT THE LOCAL PEOPLE AS THE SOURCES OF THEIR SAFETY LIVES AND SENSE OF SECURITY
In Tokyo there are approximately 1,200 Kobans (Police Boxes) and Residential Kobans that serve as the source of a sense of security for every citizen.
POLICE EMERGENCY CALL "110" AN ACCESS FOR PEACE AND ORDER OF TOKYO
Responding to emergency calls from citizens, the MPD Communications Command Center gives command to local officer by radio system so that the forefront activities for apprehension of offenders or rescue operations can be done swiftly. After we introduced the latest high-tech devices in January 1999, we became feasible for swifter and more precise operation.
FOR SAFE AND PLEASANT URBAN TRANSPORTATION
While the automobiles are an indispensable means of transportation in our life, they do have various negative impacts: many lives are lost by traffic accidents; traffic jams are constant; and environment. In a bid to quickly solve these problems, the MPD has been promoting a comprehensive measures which aims for the safe, smooth flowing, and pollution-free road traffic that would befit the society of 21st century.
NO MORE TRAGEDY ON THE ROAD
To ensure nobody gets hurt or killed on the road, every individual who uses the road needs to follow all the rules, practice good manners and never lose the "heart" to care for others. Public awareness of this issue is being vigorously promoted by the MPD officers through various activities.
TO CREATE PEACEFUL SOCIETY AND PLEASANT LIVING ENVIRONMENT
Globalization, the IT introduction and other social changes have significantly affected the crime-deterrence functions traditionally possessed by the local communities. Residential neighborhoods have been haunted by many crimes such as purse-snatches, burglaries, and convenience-store robberies. A grave threat is also posed by the rise of heinous cases committed by juveniles.
JUVENILE SUPPORT FOR THE SOUND CHARACTER
Juvenile cases constitute as much as 30 percent of all penalcode offences in Tokyo (60 percent of all arrested snatchers were minors). They have also been getting more cruel and violent in recent years, as can be seen on the rise of robberies, injuries, and cases committed with the use of knives, as well as cases committed by crime-instigating gangs.

Evidential materials collected at the scene serve not only as important clues for solving the case but also as the important exhibit items at the trials. The job of evidence gathering thus requires perseverance and expertise.
SECURITY SERVICE HELP MAKE THE OCCASION SAFE AND ENJOYABLE
Events during the New Year's holidays, firework displays and other festivals draw a large number of people, and the mass psychology inherent to the street crowd can turn these events into disorder and endanger many lives. The MPD officers maintain close contacts with the event organizers and managing staff and conduct crowd management in order to help people fully enjoy the occasions.
IN ORDER TO PROTECT AN IRREPLACEABLE LIFE, WE PREPARE FOR BIG DISASTERS AND ACCIDENTS
One of the most important duties is protecting lives in the wake of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, typhoons, and fires, and other major accidents. The MPD's Mobile Rescue Unit and Water Rescue Unit are specialized in rescue operations at disaster areas and accident scenes. Popularly known as the Rescue 110, these units are fully equipped and composed of officers specialized in rescue techniques.
TO PROTECT PEACE AND FREEDOM OF THE DEMOCRACY
The MPD endeavors to prevent terrorism, guerrilla activities and other politically motivated crimes that harm the peace of the nation and threaten the people's lives. Once such crime takes place, the MPD swiftly proceeds with the investigation.
POLICE ACADEMY TRAINS OFFICERS WHO CAN BE ENTRUSTED WITH TOKYO'S LAW AND ORDER AND SAFETY OF RESIDENTS
Young recruits attend the MPD Police Academy where theyare trained on the basis of police work. Once applicants areaccepted by the MPD, university graduates take a six-monthtraining course in which they are drilled in physical strength,vitality, and character building necessary for the MPD officers.
ADVANCED TRAINING PROGRAM IN LAW ENFORCEMENT
The police officers, who graduated from the academy's recruit course, keep undergoing education and training courses for various types of duties, including criminal investigation, community safety, traffic, and security.
